How to Clean a DPF

One of the frequently-asked DPF questions is, “How do you clean a DPF?” There are many methods of cleaning DPFs, and they vary widely according to not only the unique DPF you have, but your duty cycle and engine needs as well. So, while we can’t make a recommendation for other manufacturer’s DPF units, we can provide a brief overview of the various methods that exist. In many cases DPF cleaning is only needed if severe conditions or normal service neglect have taken place. As you will see below, the Econix® DPF-A generally doesn’t require cleaning at all*. In most cases when a DPF requires cleaning, it must be removed in order to be cleaned.

High-pressure Air Flow Cleaning:
This method utilizes high-pressure air blown through the filter to clear out any particulate. Many companies such as FSX and Envi provide products or services using this method of DPF cleaning.

Thermal Cleaning:
Thermal “baking” of the filter is required in situations where particulate build up is severe. This baking process can take many hours (about 12 hours).

Water Cleaning:
In some cases, water can be used to clean filters in a similar fashion to the high pressure air described previously. Often, water is used in cases where high pressure air is insufficient in cleaning particulate from a filter. This is often heavily impacted particulate matter, caused by heavy duty cycles or an improperly operating filter monitoring system, or simply operator neglect.

All diesel particulate matter residue expelled during these cleaning processes should be disposed of properly and treated as hazardous waste. A reliable DPF service center, or your DPF’s manufacturer, can advise you on your DPF cleaning options.

The Econix® DPF-A active diesel particulate filter stands out in the industry, not only because of its 10- minute regeneration time and durable stainless-steel construction, but also because it never requires cleaning when manufacturer directions are followed. As an added measure of security, however, the DPF-A comes with an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that manages the DPF-A’s vital signs, alerting drivers of any abnormal backpressure or service needs.

*Under normal usage the Econix DPF-A never requires cleaning.  If you own an Econix DPF-A refer to your owner's manual and an Authorized Econix Dealer as certain cleaning can void your warranty.
